Soon after birth, unnatural markings begin to appear on a neua lion's pelt.
These markings are normally quite slow to reach their full intensity, and they generally begin to show anywhere from one week of age to a month after birth. A Greek god or goddess gives a lion these markings. After they reach maturity the god or goddess that gave them their markings will take them back (normally around their 2nd name day at the naming ceremony). After these marking have been taken, each lion must earn their unnatural markings back. Earning these markings back may take as little as a week or it may take years. It depends on the god and the lion; a god may want a lion to do a specific deed, or they may just want a lion to show his loyalty to the gods/pride, etc.
Most unnatural markings are unnatural in shape and color, but some are not. An unnatural marking is defined by neua lions as any marking that the gods take back. This means that ANY and ALL marking that are taken back by the gods are considered an unnatural marking, even if they are natural in color.
Some neua lions may have only one small unnatural marking, others may have several large unnatural markings.
Unnatural markings sometimes have something to do with the lion's patron god or goddess. They may also have something to do with Greek mythology, places, etc. They more likely have something to do with the lion's personality, prophecy (if they have one) or genetics. Genes seem to be the largest factor in the shape and color of unnatural markings. However, lions have been known to have colors and markings that couldn't be from their parents' genetics.
